2013 - BARC Saxmax Championship

Martin’s Rookie Year of Car racing, saw some very impressive performances and results.

Round 1 - Croft

Some impressive form in practice was not repeated in the qualifying, having been consistently in the top 4 in practice, Martin only managed to qualify 5th with the car having developed a gear box fault. Without a spare, Martin had to race with the problem. Finishing an impressive 4th and 5th, the car not performing in 3rd gear without Martin driving with one hand and holding the gear lever in. Martin still managed to achieve the 3rd fastest lap in both races.

Round 2 - Oulton Park

Again an impressive performance, saw Martin qualify well and finish race 1 just off the podium in 4th. Race 2 was a different story, in torrential rain, trying to a move for 3rd Martin slid onto the grass and out of the race.

Round 3 - Mallory Park

After a practice day with driving coach Si Shaw, Martin put in a stellar performance at Mallory, completing a perfect weekend with Team mate Guy Wenham, with Guy taking pole and the win in both races, and Martin taking P2 in qualifying and finishing 2nd in both races.

Round 4 - Anglesey Circuit

A fantastic weekends weather with soring temperatures saw Martin again up front in practice with team mate Guy Wenham. A suspension failure on Lap 2 of qualifying saw Martin qualify P5 on his one hot lap. Without adequate spares Martin was forced to race with the damaged suspension and cruise round rather than risk more damage and take a finish in both races.

Round 5 - Donington Park

Again great weather blessed the Saxmax field, with Martin qualifying P2 for Race 1 and P3 for Race 2. With some tremendous racing up and down the field. Race 1 saw Guy Wenham loss his perfect record for the year with a mechanical issue seeing him in the barriers with 2 laps to go, Martin having a tremendous race with James Dorlin for 3rd benefitted from Guy’s mishap and promoted to 2nd.

Race 2 again saw a tremendous tussle with James Dorlin nose to tail the whole race, with Martin passing only to run wide a the last corner to let James back thru, thinking all was lost with James pulling away on the last lap, Martin put in a tremendous effort to first catch James and then overtake around the outside at the top of the hill, holding on to take 3rd and a 2nd double podium of the year.

Round 6 - Brands Hatch

The most competitive qualifying of the season saw fastest lap held by 4 different drivers; including Martin. In an exciting final 2 laps with 3 drivers setting a further fastest lap, Martin eventually can out with P3.

A great start to Race 1 saw Martin and 2 other drivers break away, following a safety car period the pack closed up and on the second flying lap an over optimistic move by a fellow competitor saw Martin in the barrier with extensive front end damage.

Following an heroic effort and a late night from Century Motorsport Mechanics and the very nice man from RPM, the car was somehow fixed for the 2nd race on Sunday. Althogh not as competitive as the 1st race Martin had a busy race in the pack with numerous incidents between them. Martin held on for a well deserved 5th place.

Round 7 - Silverstone

With the car fully repaired, although a bit patchwork as no time for a re-spray, Martin set out for his first experence of Silverstone Circuit, where the week before the BTCC had been held. A very wet weekend at Silverstone saw some exciting racing with numerous offs, but Martin mastered the horrendous conditions to finish 4th and 3rd for a good finish of the season and 4th in the Championship.
